Los Angeles Rapid Detox for Treating Opioid Addiction
Data shows that substance use and overdose deaths significantly rose during the COVID-19 pandemic. There were over 87,000 overdose deaths between October 2019 and September 2020. Reports also show that there were twice as many deaths from overdoses during the same period than from the coronavirus in the city of San Francisco.
According to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), in 2020, Los Angeles County had a sharp increase in opioid deaths. One thousand one hundred seventy-three deaths involved fentanyl. As of May 2021, there were 567 deaths in Los Angeles County related to fentanyl overdoses, an approximate increase of 57% from the prior year.
California Opioid Legislation
This year, Dr. Arambula, an ER physician’s local assembly member, introduced a bill to improve medically assisted treatment (MAT). MAT is a popular form of opioid addiction treatment usually provided by insurance carriers. However, Dr. Arambula’s goal is to remove barriers preventing opioid users from seeking this treatment method.
MAT involves prescribing opioid replacement drugs to stop withdrawal symptoms and cravings. Physicians prescribe these medications, including Suboxone, on an outpatient basis or during an inpatient rehab treatment.
Medically-Assisted Treatment in Los Angeles
MAT is effective as a method of harm reduction. For example, overdose risks are very high when a person uses heroin, so prescribing Suboxone can reduce these risks. Those with more severe mental health conditions may succeed with long-term Suboxone use than attempting to remain opioid-free.
Overall, patients have a tough road when trying to detox from MAT drugs like Suboxone or Methadone. On the contrary, Suboxone is not an appropriate choice for many opioid users. Many patients are successful at living an opioid-free life if they can get through the detox. Those taking low-dose painkillers, like hydrocodone, are likely to experience less severe withdrawal symptoms than if they attempt to detox off Suboxone. Therefore, this is only a temporary solution, often requiring another inpatient detox.
Rapid Detox Los Angeles
There is a wealth of addiction treatment programs in Los Angeles. Outpatient treatment, long-term inpatient programs, and outpatient addiction doctors are the most commonly found options. Most of these offer MAT or detox. Outpatient centers typically offer group therapy, inpatient programs provide detox and counseling, and outpatient doctors usually only prescribe MAT medications. The issue is that most of these programs are deficient in some way because they do not address the medical, physiological, and psychological aspects of opioid dependence and addiction.
One of the primary reasons patients fail in rehabs is because they cannot withstand the withdrawal syndrome. Most inpatient programs offering detox have their physician prescribe medications to assist the patient in tolerating symptoms. However, it often takes place in a residential facility without medical care. Staff then monitor the patient and provide counseling.
Another downside to long-term inpatient care is that people do not have the flexibility to commit to 30 to 90 days in a facility. Those who can receive emotional support during their stay but frequently relapse when they return to the daily stresses of life. The majority of issues like anxiety, depression, and trauma are unlikely to be cured in 90 days. Furthermore, clients may get lost in group therapy and never feel their individual needs were addressed adequately.
