Los Angeles’ Need for Opioid Treatment
California had one of the highest drug overdose death rates in the country in the 1990s. Currently, it is the 7th lowest in the country’s opioid epidemic. However, this doesn’t mean that cities like Los Angeles are not seeing their fair share of opioid-related losses.
Data from 1999 to 2014 shows that deaths from prescription painkillers have quadrupled in LA County. In addition, heroin-related deaths have more than doubled from 2010 to 2014. Along with increased overdose rates, Los Angeles has seen an increase in emergency rooms visits and addiction treatment admissions.
California Opioid Legislation
This year, Dr. Arambula, a local assembly member, and ER physician introduced a bill to improve assess to Medical Assisted Treatment (MAT). This is a popular form of opioid addiction treatment that insurance carriers usually provide coverage for. However, Dr. Arambula’s goal is to remove any barriers preventing opioid users from seeking this treatment method.
MAT involves prescribing opioid replacement drugs to stop withdrawal symptoms and cravings. Physicians prescribe these medications, including Suboxone, on an outpatient basis or during an inpatient rehab treatment.

MAT is effective as a method of harm reduction. For example, the risks of overdose are very high when a person is using heroin, so prescribing Suboxone can reduce these risks. In addition, those with more severe mental health conditions may have more success with long-term Suboxone use than attempting to remain opioid-free.
On the contrary, Suboxone is not an appropriate choice for many opioid users. Many patients are successful at living an opioid-free life if they can get through the detox. Those taking low dose painkillers, like hydrocodone, are likely to experience less severe withdrawal symptoms than if they attempt to detox off of Suboxone. Overall, patients have a very difficult road when attempting to detox from MAT drugs like Suboxone or Methadone. Therefore, this is only a temporary solution often requiring another inpatient detox.
Los Angeles Drug Treatment
There is a wealth of addiction treatment programs in LA. Outpatient treatment, long-term inpatient programs, and outpatient addiction doctors are the most commonly found options. Most of these offer MAT or detox. Outpatient centers typically offer group therapy, inpatient programs offer detox and counseling, and outpatient doctors typically only prescribe MAT medications. The issue is that most of these programs are deficient in some way because they do not address the medical, physiological and psychological aspects of opioid dependence and addiction.
One of the primary reasons patients don’t succeed in rehabs is because they cannot withstand the withdrawal syndrome. Most inpatient programs offering detox simply have their physician prescribe medications to assist the patient in tolerating symptoms. Staff then monitor the patient and provide counseling. However, it often takes place in a residential facility without medical care.
Another downside to long-term inpatient care is that people do not have the flexibility to commit to 30 to 90 days in a facility. Those who can… may receive emotional support during their stay, but frequently relapse when they return to the daily stresses of life. The majority of issues like anxiety, depression, and trauma won’t be cured in 90 days. Furthermore, clients may get lost in group therapy and never feel their individual needs were adequately addressed.
