Codeine Dependency

Codeine dependency is becoming more and more prevalent amongst Americans. The prescription pain medication Codeine is an opiate-a naturally occurring constituent of opium-prescribed to relieve mild to moderate pain. When taken inappropriately, the drug can lead patients to become addicted to Codeine, whether ingested alone or in combination with another painkiller such as Tylenol® (acetaminophen).

Research indicates that every year nearly two million Americans use prescription opioid painkillers, and in some communities, abuse of prescription painkillers has overtaken cocaine and marijuana use. The 2002 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (NHSDA) showed that approximately 9% of the U.S. population has used pain relievers illegally in their lifetime. An estimated 1.6 million Americans used prescription-type pain relievers non-medically for the first time in 1998. This represents a significant increase since the 1980s, when there were generally fewer than 500,000 new users per year.

Treating Codeine Dependency - Detox Methods

Codeine detox can be difficult because there are both mental and physical aspects of Codeine dependency. Opiates travel rapidly through the bloodstream to the brain, where they stimulate opiate receptors, triggering intense feelings of pleasure and reward. This quick high is followed a state of relaxation and contentment that lasts for several hours. Concurrently, opiates act directly on the respiratory center in the brainstem, causing a decrease in the breathing rate of the user. When Codeine and/or other opiate-derivative drugs are used incorrectly, this breathing slow-down can be dangerous and even fatal.

Traditional methods of treatment for patients addicted to Codeine-talk therapy along with medicinal treatment to lessen the pain of withdrawal-often have low success rates (less than 10% after the first year) due to codeine's powerful, physically addictive properties.

A newer and quicker method of Codeine detox is Accelerated Neuro-Regulation (ANR), a rapid drug treatment that is being used with increasing success for opiate dependency. ANR, also known as the Waismann Method of rapid detox, treats codeine dependency as a physical disease that can be overcome with advanced medical techniques. ANR eliminates the cravings that often accompany traditional opiate detox treatments. The Waismann Method has been clinically proven to be effective for patients addicted to Codeine.

During Codeine detox using ANR or the Waismann Method, the body's opiate receptors are cleansed of opiates while the patient is anaesthetized and asleep. The goal is to rid the body of physical Codeine dependency: the patient literally sleeps through physical withdrawal. The Waismann Method reports higher success rates in treating opiate dependency than do clinics utilizing more traditional techniques.
